Why is sleep important?
We all know the value of sleeping well, and we’ve all experienced the feeling of being refreshed after a good night’s sleep and the feeling of fatigue after a poor night’s sleep. But even though we know this, in our busy society, many of us are not getting the quality sleep needed to truly receive the health benefits of sleep. And here’s a surprising fact- your body and all its parts, don’t need sleep. Not even your muscles or organs! Sleep is only essential for our nervous system. The three benefits of sleep are to rest, replenish and repair of the central nervous system. These three things are called the three R’s of sleep. If our nervous system doesn’t get an adequate amount of sleep we tend to feel indirect effects including: drowsiness, irritability, difficulty remembering things and possible craving of unhealthy foods.
Some natural tips for better sleep include:
- Make sure your room is completely dark while you sleep
- Don’t leave the TV on
- Keep naps to around 20 minutes per day
- Shoot for 8 hours of sleep per night
- Keep the temperature in your bedroom between 60-68 degrees
- Use melatonin for occasional insomnia
If you’re still having trouble with getting a good night’s sleep, talk to your chiropractor in Hopkins and we’ll get you pointed in the right direction- naturally.
Have a healthy day everyone!
